Ducks
These lovely animals are hand made of either Kisii Stone or Raku Pottery.
Kisii Stone, also called “Soap Stone”, originates from the Kisii region of Western Kenya. It is mined by the Gusii and Abigussi tribes using shovels, crowbars and hammers before it is hand carved with knives and other hand tools. In its original form Kisii stone varies from white, pink, brown, yellow or black. Once carved it is sanded and polished before it is dyed. After it is coloured patterns are often carved onto the stone. The sales of these carvings bring valuable employment to the area where most households are involved in some form of the production process.
The Raku Pottery project is based in Cape Town, South Africa and provides secure employment in an area where unemployment is high. Employees are also mentored in financial and life skills.
Both the Kisii Stone and the Raku Pottery are FAIR TRADE products
